Driven by Cold War tensions between the US and the Soviet Union, the space race began in the late 1950s. As satellite technologies have become an integral part of our daily lives, they have profoundly influenced the course of human civilization for more than 60 years. These technologies have provided humanity with many remarkable insights the world over. For example, observation satellites provide a continuous view of our planet for effective monitoring of the environment. There are clear turning points in history when things changed, and new courses were plotted. The space community is experiencing such a point today.
