In October 2002, the Indian National Academy of Sciences (INSA), which undertook to conduct the IAP's Science Education Program, organized a regional seminar on Science Education in Asia. Participation of TÜBA Former President Prof. Yücel Kanpolat was a starter in terms of addressing the issue in Türkiye . It was agreed that science education should be the primary area of activity of the Academy as it is in the world academies with the decision of the Academy Council on 9 November 2002. In addition, it has been considered that it is a common duty to examine the teaching of science in pre-school education to higher education in science academies as a universal duty, and it is widely observed that the necessity to create participatory models in student-centered education teaching practices. It was decided to establish a Working Group from the Academy members in order to identify and plan the activities and programs that the academy could initiate in this regard under the direction of Prof. Yücel Kanpolat. Science Education Project started with this decision.
TÜBA-Science Education Project aims to ensure the direct connection of scientists, local and foreign experts on the subject, and enthusiastic teacher groups to science education; to create an internet portal that will provide support to teachers by providing sample applications and materials that will be easily accessible via the internet; to extend the concept and applications of inquiry-based education in our country; and to introduce scientists to young people with the organized activities.
Within the scope of the restructured program in 2015, a cooperation protocol was signed between the Minister of National Education Nabi Avcı and TÜBA President Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar. Joint training programs are planned by MoNE and TÜBA.
The primary target group of the Science Education Program consists of teachers (especially secondary school teachers) who play an active role in directing young people to scientific studies, school administrators and parents.
It is aimed to conduct studies on correct explanation and implementation of science education and making scientists as a role model for young people by bringing trainers specializing in course content and pedagogy and specialist scientists in the field with teachers and other contacts together under the program.
