Muş During the National Struggle

Muş Sanjak, which was part of Bitlis Province during the National Struggle years, consisted of Malazgirt, Bulanık, and Varto districts. Due to various administrative problems, Muş was transformed into an independent province through the efforts of its political representatives. Muş and its surroundings became important agitation center for the Armenian committees before and after World War I and Russia, in particular, England, and France were in close contact with the Armenian committees in the region. The Russian occupation during the war and the activities of Armenian committees in the region caused a great migration and massacre of Muslims. Muş refugees scattered throughout different cities of Anatolia, spread over the area from Siirt, which is the closest region, to Bursa, and faced many problems. The Sanjak of Muş, whose population decreased by half, entered the recovery period after the war, and it took decades for the devastated Muş and its districts to recover themselves politically, economically and socially due to financial impossibilities and human factor. Due to the fact that Muş officials could not receive their salaries for a long time, they tended to various poverty-related crimes, the struggles between the tribes and the usurpation and plunder of the gangs destroyed the security and government order in the region. This study aims to evaluate these main issues in Muş and its surroundings, such as transportation, education, economic life, and political representation, within the framework of period sources during a four-year period.
