Bayezid (Ağrı) During the National Struggle

The province of Ağrı, under the name of Karakilise/Karaköse, was one of the five districts of the Bayezid sanjak of the Erzurum province in the National Struggle. Bayezid sanjak, which was exposed to the Russian and the Armenian occupation during the First World War due to its location at the intersection of the Russian and Iranian borders of the Ottoman Empire, carried the heavy burden of the war on its shoulders during the National Struggle. Bayezid sanjak attended the congress held in Erzurum in July 1919 as an honorary member of the Eastern Province Defense Society, among the founders of which was Bayezid's deputy, Şefik Bey. At the same time, a branch of the Vilâyât-ı Şarkiyye Müdafaa-i Hukuk Vilayeti Cemiyeti was opened in Bayezid by Bayezid Mayor Abdülaziz Bey. Again, in the National Struggle, the Tribal Regiments of the Bayezid sanjak also made a great contribution to the success of the military operation of the 15th Corps under the command of Kâzım Karabekir Pasha on October 30, 1920, to liberate Sarıkamış, Göle, Kağızman and Kars from the Armenian occupation. The people of Bayezid (Ağrı) showed their sacrifice on the eastern front and stood by the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye during the National Struggle. In the study, it was revealed that Bayezid and the people of his region made significant contributions to the unity and solidarity struggle of Anatolia, even though they were exposed to all kinds of poverty and misery as well as border raids and atrocities by the Armenians during the National Struggle Period.
