Endless Mobilization: National Struggle War Economy in Ankara (1918-1923)

Despite being a small city, Ankara, the center of the National Struggle, was assigned many political missions during the war years. Due to its small-scale economy and the extraordinary conditions during the years of the National Struggle, it was exposed to economic conditions similar to those of the World War I period. While agricultural production and industry were shaped according to the needs of the front line, the chronic problems of the World War I years, such as price gouging and the high cost of living, were also seen in the Ankara of the national struggle. During this period, Ankara, which had begun to become the center of political power, also experienced economic stirrings, and the national economic policies of the Committee of Union and Progress were followed, albeit on a small scale. The main purpose of this study is to demonstrate through the example of Ankara that the economic conditions that emerged during World War I continued, albeit partially, during the years of the War of Independence.
