Press Activities in Ankara during the National Struggle Period (1918-1923)

Press and media organs, which are one of the most important results of the need of societies and states for interaction and communication, are defined as mass media that directly affect the development of contemporary life. Newspapers and magazines have an important place in this communication mechanism. The press movement, which started to become widespread in the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, reached its peak in the first half of the 20th century at national and local levels. One of the important turning points in Turkish political history, the press played a vital role during the period of struggle. The press, which can be as useful a tool as armed struggle in times of war, was used as the most effective propaganda tool of the National Struggle movement. This article reveals how press activities in Ankara were constructed and organized in line with what kind of objectives. In this way, the role of the press has been tried to be determined from the activities carried out by the press. More than thirty newspapers and magazines were published in these activities shaped around organizations such as Hâkimiyet-i Milliye and Anadolu Agency, which had an impact on Ankara's press life during the National Struggle. As a result of this publication's concessionaires, basic policies, publishing intervals, and general contents were tried to be determined. With this study, it is hoped to contribute to the literature by bringing together the press activities in Ankara during the National Struggle under a single title. The press and media organizations that emerged in Ankara are examined through primary sources and research works. For this purpose, the document analysis technique, which has been used extensively in the science of history, has been used.
