Local History of the National Struggle 1918-1923 (Vol 10): Edirne - Kırklareli - Tekirdağ

Lüleburgaz District Governor Ahmed Esad Sezai Bey During the National Struggle

The year 1919 was a year when the Greek atrocities in Luleburgaz reached their peak. Public order in the region was completely disrupted and the local residents of Luleburgaz, especially Muslims and Jews, were the target of Greek outrages. On the other hand, the people of Luleburgaz had to to struggle with a local authority who showed "helplessness" against the occupation practices of the Greeks in the mentioned period. This administrative head was Ahmed Esad Sezai (Sünbüllük) Bey, who served as district governor in Luleburgaz between February 15 and July 8, 1919. During his tenure, public order incidents increased significantly. His lack of reaction against the Greek actions and that he took refuge in the Greek headquarters and asked for protection from the commander in the face of the people's outcry against the atrocities caused him to be accused of being "incapable" and "collaborator" by the people of Luleburgaz. Finally, thanks to the reaction of the people of Luleburgaz, a reshuffle was made between Ahmed Esad Sezai Bey and Demirköy District Governor Salih Bey. Ahmed Esad Sezai Bey was appointed as the District Governor of Ezine after his appointment as the District Governor of Demirköy, where he continued his close relations with the Greeks as he had done in Luleburgaz.
