Prof. E. Fuat Keyman Passed Away

Sabancı University (SU) Vice Rector for Institutionalization and Social Contribution Processes and one of Türkiye's leading figures in the field of International Relations and Political Science, Prof. Emin Fuat Keyman has passed away.

Known for his important work on democratization, globalization, international relations, Türkiye-EU relations, Turkish foreign policy and civil society development, Director of SU Istanbul Policy Center, we wish Allah's mercy to Prof. Keyman and our condolences to his family, loved ones and the academic community.

Who is Prof. E. Fuat Keyman?
Born in 1958. He graduated from Middle East Technical University (METU), Department of Political Science and Public Administration in 1981 and received his master's degree from the same department in 1983. He completed his PhD in International Relations and Comparative Politics at Carleton University in 1991. He did postdoctoral work at Wellesley College and Harvard University. In the summer of 1997, he was a visiting professor at Carleton University.

He taught at Bilkent University, Department of Political Science and Public Administration from 1994 to 2002 and at Koç University, Department of International Relations from 2002 to 2010.  Fuat Keyman has recently served as vice-rector at Sabancı University and lectured on international relations.

In 2013, he won the Strategic Visionary Scientist Award at the 7th Tasam Strategic Vision Awards.  Keyman is a member of the advisory board of many prestigious national and international organizations and has served on the editorial boards of many important international academic journals. He also serves on the scientific advisory boards of the Austrian Institute of International Affairs (OIIP) and the Center for Global Pluralism. He has served as the research director for various projects including Peter Berger and Samuel Huntington's "Many Globalizations - Cultural Diversity the Contemporary World"; “Sustainable Urban Policies: Quality of Life in Terms of City-regions in Turkey”; Strengthening Checks and Balances in Turkey, SIDA, Sweden; “Enacting European Citizenship” 7th Framework Program; State in the 21st Century (Türkiye Director); Mapping Civil Society in Turkey, CIVICUS, and received support from the Turkish Council for Scientific and Technological Research on urbanization. In addition to his academic work, he has been sharing his thoughts and analyses about Türkiye in the global context with the public through various newspaper columns and television programs since 2002.

He is the author and editor of nearly 30 books, including "Future Politics - Globalization, State, Democracy, and Identity" (with Evren Balta, 2022); "The Story of Eight Cities" (with Berrin Koyuncu-Lorasdağı, 2020); "Kurdish Issue: Local Dynamics and Conflict Resolution" (with Ayşe Köse, 2019); "Istanbul: Living with Difference in a Global City" (with Nora Fisher-Onar and Susan C. Pearce, 2018); "Turkey, The Arab Spring and Beyond" (with Bülent Aras, 2016); "Remaking Turkey" (2013); Küreselleşme, Devlet, Kimlik, Farklılık: Uluslararası İlişkiler Kuramını Yeniden Düşünmek (Globalization, State, Identity, Difference: Rethinking International Relations Theory) (2000). Keyman has also authored numerous articles in prestigious international journals including Journal of Democracy, Third World Quarterly, European Journal of Social Theory, Theory Culture & Society, Review of International Political Economy, and Journal of Balkan and Near Eastern Studies.
