Afyonkarahisar During the National Struggle

The Turkish War of Independence is the total struggle of a nation in the Anatolian geography. The front where the struggle was most intense is the Western front. On the western front, the fight was fought first with the militia and then with the regular armies. The region was first occupied by the Entente powers. Later, the Greek occupations that started with Izmir were quite destructive. Afyonkarahisar became one of the most important cities of the Turkish resistance in terms of both the Kuvâ-yı Milliye units and the regular army. After the Armistice of Mudros, Afyonkarahisar was occupied first by the Entente powers and then by the Greeks. The city was a very important center during the National Struggle process due to its geographical location and being at the intersection of transportation lines. The Greek forces, which occupied the city for 14 months, had built the strongest fortification in this region. Therefore, the Turkish army started the offensive movement from this city in order to achieve a decisive victory. In this study, the role of Afyonkarahisar in the War of Independence was discussed in various aspects. In this context; The occupations of Afyonkarahisar, the reactions to the occupations, prominent resistance leaders, the attitude of the minorities in the city, the organizational work in the region and the liberation of the city from the occupation were examined under the relevant headings.
